Thrilling weekend sees MJDP pick up pair of wins; Jets down Columbus, fall to Toledo

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The MJDP team earned two hard-fought wins over the weekend at Mount Clemens Ice Arena in defeating the Battle Creek Kernels Friday night and then the Fort Wayne Spacemen in overtime Sunday afternoon.

The Motor City Gamblers started the week with a 7-2 win Wednesday afternoon over the MJDP at Big Boy Arena in nearby Fraser.

Also over last weekend, the Metro Jets downed the Columbus Mavericks 5-2 Friday night at home before falling 5-2 the next night to the Toledo Cherokee, also at Mount Clemens.

In the MJDP win over Battle Creek, Jacques Lavrack, Robert Grasso and Bennett Sheppard (empty net) scored and Andrew Parmentier made 23 saves between the pipes for the 3-1 victory.

“We got our feet moving early and popped one 30 seconds in, and that was really important,” said Jets defenseman Josh Boze. “When we get our feet moving, we’re really hard to defend against.”

For the Kernels, Liam Donnelly started in goal and allowed Grasso’s goal 37 seconds into the first period before departing with an equipment issue. He finished with two saves before Galvin Reagan went the rest of the way and made 34 saves on 35 shots.

Sunday afternoon, Lucas Millmine scored in the sixth round of the shootout to lift the MJDP to a thrilling 4-3 win over Fort Wayne.

“It was a fun hockey game and a good rivalry game between us and Fort Wayne,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “They’re a well-coached team and work hard, but our guys came out on top today in the shootout. It was a good game.”

Pierce Ashcroft, Lukas Nies, and Jackson Hinkle scored in regulation with goaltender Taylor White turning aside 35 shots.

“The two points are huge; we’re chasing Fort Wayne (for first place in the Midwest East Division) and it’s a big win for us,” Millmine said. “Just have to keep climbing.”

Sam Tetreault, Grigory Koryazhin, and Kyle Remo tallied Fort Wayne’s goal and Maxim Zinchenko finished with 40 saves.

Lavrack and Ashcroft scored in the loss to Motor City and Austin Muirhead stopped 49 shots in goal.

Four games, eight points as Jets sweep Columbus, MJDP takes both from Crush

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Metro Jets and MJDP teams each picked up four points this past weekend by getting two wins apiece.

The Jets swept the Columbus Mavericks in a home-and-home series Friday and Saturday and the MJDP won both games at Mount Clemens Ice Arena from the Chicago Crush Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday night, Lucas Millmine posted a goal and two assists and Max Rastello scored on a penalty shot to back Andrew Parmentier’s 21-save effort in goal as the MJDP took a 5-1 win.

Then Sunday afternoon, Jack Rivera scored his first two junior hockey goals, including the game winner 47 seconds into overtime, as the MJDP downed Chicago 3-2.

“We had some great puck movement from the guys out there,” said Rivera. “I supported the puck, which the coaches have been talking about, and got a shot through, something else that have been talking about. We’ve been at a little bit of a scoring deficit, but look what happened today. Good things.”

Jacob Lawrence also scored, Rastello collected two assists, and Taylor White finished with 23 saves.

Andrew Young made 35 saves for the Crush, who got goals from Owen Rycerz and Troy Ogarek.

“It’s been tough for these guys to figure out how to play two games in a row,” Jets associate coach Tina Ciraulo said. “Finding the back of the net is a huge thing and we’ve been starting to come around and play like we know how to play. We just have to keep working on playing back-to-back games and figure out how to come out ready for each of those games.”

Kicking off the weekend Friday night at the OhioHealth Chiller North, Robert Vanderdonck and Seve Litz each had a goal and an assist and Freddy Soderberg 25 saves in the Jets’ 4-1 win over the Mavericks.

Jets standout Vaerewyck tabbed to represent native Belgium at World Junior Championship

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – After the annual IIHF World Junior Championship ends each year the first week of January, smaller versions of the event take place in the weeks after.

This year, Metro Jets forward Yarne Vaerewyck is playing for his native Belgium in the Division II, Group B segment of the tournament being held in Iceland.

“I think it’s a nice accomplishment to add to the books, and I think it’s definitely an experience to learn from in multiple ways,” said Vaerewyck. “It’s also a hockey tournament, so it’s fun.”

“This is a great opportunity for Yarne and well deserved,” added Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “Any time you get to represent your country, it’s an honor. We are proud of him and wish him luck. He will be missed this weekend, but look forward to getting him back on the ice with the team here.”

The tournament started Jan. 16 and wraps Jan. 22, “hopefully with a medal,” Vaerewyck said.

“I’ve learned that it’s good not to have expectations and to just go with the flow since you can’t get disappointed that way,” said Vaerewyck.

This season with the Jets, the 19-year-old Vaerewyck has tallied 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points in 28 games.

“I’m looking forward to be back with the guys and the organization,” Vaerewyck said. “They’ve been nothing but good to me so I can’t wait to reunite and to get ready for some big upcoming games and to have a strong season with the boys here.”

This weekend, the Jets play a home-and-home with Columbus, starting Friday at the OhioHealth Chiller North at 8:30 p.m. and finishing Saturday at Mount Clemens at 4:30 p.m. The MJDP hosts the Chicago Crush for two games at Mount Clemens, opening Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and wrapping Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

MJDP blanks Decatur in back-to-back road games, Jets take two points from Columbus at home

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Metro Jets and MJDP teams each picked up wins last weekend, with the Jets defeating the Columbus Mavericks Friday night at home and the MJDP team sweeping the Decatur Blaze on the road with a pair of shutouts.

At Mount Clemens Ice Arena, Chad Noetzel picked up two goals and an assist as the Jets took a 6-1 decision on home ice.

Rocco Stolz made 18 saves in goal and Robert Vanderdonck, Tyler Husted, and Andreas Fleutot all posted a goal and an assist.

“I felt good, got the legs going, and just did the right things, I guess,” Vanderdonck said.

Lucas Wiktorowski added a goal and Alex Schaumburger collected two assists in the win.

“We scored six goals and it’s been a while since we’ve been able to convert that many chances,” Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell said. “We got some good hockey goals, but we’ve still got to be better managing the puck, that’s for sure.”

Jadon Beard netted the lone Columbus goal and Brenden Cobb finished with 39 saves in goal.

At the Decatur Civic Center, the MJDP won 6-0 Saturday night and 2-0 Sunday afternoon.

Taylor White stopped all 14 shots Saturday and Austin Muirhead turned aside all 19 he faced on Sunday.

In the opener, Lukas Nies scored three goals while Jacques Lavrack, Nolan Salayko, and Max Rastello added single goals.

Chase Miller made 52 saves in goal for Decatur.

Wrapping up Sunday, Alek John and Robert Grasso scored and Lavrack assisted on both to get the sweep.

Daniel Kreiner registered 61 saves for the Blaze.

“The boys pulled off the two wins, which was good, but it’s going to be tough the next few weeks here if we can’t find a way to put the puck in the net,” Jets associate coach Tina Ciraulo said. “It took us more than half the game the first night to find the back of net. We found it five more times in the third, which was nice and fun to watch. We will get back to work this week and start focusing on the next game.”

Onward and upward: Jets associate coach Morrison takes job as assistant with USHL’s Lumberjacks

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Metro Jets are one of the top junior hockey organizations in advancing players to higher levels of the game.

That also goes for coaches.

Today, the Jets have announced that associate coach Adam Morrison has been named the new assistant coach for the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League, the country’s only Tier I junior hockey league.

Morrison, a local 28-year-old Macomb product, joined the Jets at the start of the current 2022-23 USPHL season.

“I am thankful to have been able to coach with the Jets and see firsthand how this organization focuses on developing better hockey players, coaches, and people,” Morrison said. “‘Q’ (head coach and general manager Justin Quenneville), (associate head coach) Jamie (Lovell), (associate coach) Tina (Ciraulo), and (goaltending instructor) Randy (Wilson) are some of the smartest hockey minds I’ve had the chance to be on the ice with and I’ve learned a ton from them in my time here. I’m thankful I had the opportunity to work with them and I can’t thank Q and (Jets owner and president) Pete (Cammick) enough for bringing me on board this season. As a local guy, I always wondered how the Jets were able to have so much sustained success over the years and it is because the coaching staff’s only focus and goal is to develop the players’ individual skills and hockey IQ on a daily basis.

“The Metro Jets are the gold standard for junior hockey and helping players achieve their own respective goals. If you are a player that wants to play at the next level, whether it’s Tier II or college, there is no better place to go in the United States than the Metro Jets.”

Quenneville said that while Morrison will be missed in Mount Clemens, the USHL is a great opportunity to keep his coaching career on the upward climb.

“First off, we would like to congratulate ‘Mo’ on this opportunity,” Quenneville said. “In my conversations with Muskegon and their staff, it was an easy sell given his abilities and character. In his short time here, he was an asset for our organization and Muskegon will see that. Although his time with the Jets is bittersweet, this is not the first or last time players and staff will take advantage of opportunities in this industry. We look forward to following his success in the USHL and continuing to provide the best platform for Jets players and staff alike.”

During his playing days, Morrison played AAA hockey in the Detroit area before junior hockey stops in the NAHL and USHL and then a four-year NCAA career at Nichols College from 2015-19.

USPHL Tampa Showcase gives Jets, MJDP teams two wins each to open 2023 calendar year

TAMPA, Fla. – The Metro Jets and MJDP teams opened 2023 with a trip to Tampa to play in the USPHL Tampa Showcase.

The event ran Jan. 5-9 at AdventHealth Center Ice in nearby Wesley Chapel.

Over the course of the showcase, both the Jets and MJDP went 2-2 against tough competition.

The Jets defeated the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes 4-1, lost 4-1 to the Charlotte Rush, fell 5-1 to the Tampa Bay Juniors, and then topped the Florida Eels 5-2.

“I would have liked to be a little more successful in terms of wins, but coming away .500 isn’t bad against some of the top teams in our league from the south region,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “We came here to expose our players to scouts and compete with the best in order to continue to develop them and prepare them for what’s to come if we want to play for a championship at the end of the season. Mission accomplished.”

The MJDP squad blanked the Cincinnati Jr. Cyclones 4-0, lost 1-0 to the Jersey Hitmen, edged the Florida Jr. Blades 2-1, and then fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Palm Beach Typhoon.

“Overall, the boys had a good weekend,” Jets associate coach Tina Ciraulo said. “There’s always things we can work on. Definitely need to start finding the back of the net because it’s tough to win games if we can’t score. The showcase format of four games in three days is a lot, but it’s great exposure for our guys. It was nice to go play some different teams in different divisions, and our boys showed that they can compete and play with any other division.”

This coming weekend, the Jets host the Columbus Mavericks Friday night at 8 p.m. from Mount Clemens Ice Arena while the MJDP plays two on the road in Decatur against the Blaze Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CST and Sunday at noon CST from the Decatur Civic Center.

USPHL Chicago Showcase yields four wins, four shutouts for Jets; MJDP, MHC squads also gain victories

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Metro Jets continue to make waves in the junior hockey world.

Notoriously known for their offense and setting records over their 34-year history, the Jets did something at the USPHL Chicago Showcase never done by any team before: record four straight shutouts at a showcase event.

Games were held Dec. 15-18 at the Leafs Ice Centre and Canlan Romeoville in suburban Chicago.

“I don’t think there’s such a thing as playing a perfect game in hockey, but I would have to say we came as close as you can to it, and then we did it three more times and actually got better as the showcase went on,” Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell said. “We played four games against tough, quality opponents in a showcase format and did not give up a single goal against – that’s pretty impressive.

“The theme of the weekend was our offense being our best defense as we played so well in the offensive zone that we didn’t give up a lot, making our goalies’ workload light. Not to take credit away from Rocco (Stolz) and Freddy (Soderberg), who pitched two shutouts each, and made the big saves when they were called upon. I’d say that’s even more difficult to be a goalie in games where you go long periods without getting tested, and then all of a sudden have to make a big save.”

The Jets defeated the Northern Colorado Eagles 2-0, the Minnesota Blue Ox 1-0, Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings 3-0, and the Pueblo Bulls 3-0.

“If there was any negative to take away, it would be that we didn’t convert as many chances as we would have liked,” said Lovell. “Eight goals of offense in four games isn’t anything to brag about, but the way we won these games this weekend was a coach’s dream. Great way to go into the holiday break, get some much-needed rest, and come back for the second half of the season starting in the Tampa showcase.”

“The Jets were outstanding and played some of the best hockey I’ve seen from them,” added Jets associate coach Adam Morrison. “It was great to see the whole team contributing and buying in for the success. Our leaders led the way but from top to bottom, they were really fun to watch.”

Also at the showcase, the MJDP and MHC teams took part, with the MJDP finishing 3-1 and the MHC 1-3.

The MJDP squad defeated the Riverkings 2-0, the Steele County Blades 2-0, and the Columbus Mavericks 2-1 in overtime before falling to the Blue Ox 3-1.

On the MHC side, the team downed the Decatur Blaze 6-2 and lost to the Dells Ducks 5-1, the Minnesota Moose 5-1, and the Chicago Cougars 5-1.

“Given the circumstances, we felt the guys competed hard and represented the organization professionally,” said Jets associate coach Tina Ciraulo. “We strive to give many opportunities for our guys, and they impressed a lot of scouts. Our program is all about providing the best platform for development and exposure, and each one of our guys did a great job taking advantage of this. They were the youngest team in the event and were right there with each team they played. Even after their win, they continued to scale up and can walk away from this knowing it was good for their development.”

“The MHC competed in every game and gave everything they had, even getting a win over Decatur,” added Morrison.

After a two-week break, next up on the schedule is the USPHL Tampa Showcase, slated for Jan. 5-9 at Advent Health Center Ice in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Joey Mocnik added a goal and Alex Bedenko chipped in four assists and Devon Mastay a pair of helpers.

Harber Cassel and Galvin Reagan combined to make 47 saves for the Kernels.

Friday night against the Cherokee at the Team Toledo IceHouse, Fleutot had a goal and two assists and Dakota Kott and Bedenko each collected a goal and an assist in a 6-4 setback.

Schaumburger also scored, Michael Lucia posted two assists, and Freddy Soderberg finished with 26 saves.

“It was a good game for both teams and it came down to them capitalizing on our mistakes and having a bit more energy in the third period,” Jets associate coach Adam Morrison said. “Could have gone either way and we certainly had our chances to score a few more goals.”

This coming weekend, the Jets are off to the USPHL Chicago Showcase before breaking for the holidays.

Recent USPHL Detroit Showcase at Mount Clemens Ice Arena ‘a great event, top to bottom’

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – For the fourth straight season, the Metro Jets hosted the USPHL Detroit Showcase, with the 2022 edition featuring 34 games over four days at Mount Clemens Ice Arena.

A total of 17 teams from the Great Lakes, Midwest East, Midwest West, and Mid-Atlantic divisions all took part in the event that ran Nov. 18-21 at the Jets’ home rink.

“We would like to thank all the volunteers, staff and our facility for all the help in making this event run so smooth and professionally,” Jets head coach and general manager Justin Quenneville said. “Along with all the Midwest teams, it was great to see new teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania this year. Overall, the feedback was great and many of the scouts complimented the competition and event itself, which makes it all worthwhile.”

Over 23 schools and 47 total scouts signed in attended the event, which was highlighted by consistent competition all weekend long.

On the ice, several teams were noticeable. the Toledo Cherokee went a perfect 4-0, while the Fort Wayne Spacemen, Isanti Outlaws and Jets all finished with a 3-1 mark.

“The Detroit Showcase really came off great,” said Jets owner and president Peter Cammick. “The result sets a high standard for the entire USPHL. This success is a result of very hard work by a large group of people, mostly behind the scenes, ensuring everything ran smoothly. From the planning and management handled by Justin Quenneville, to the announcers, special appearance by the Dan K Show, and the game operations staff, it was a total team effort. The on-ice action was just as impressive with some great matchups, exciting games, and, most importantly, great exposure for the players to the many college scouts in attendance.

“My bottom line – this was a great event, top to bottom.”

Off the ice, every game was broadcast with play-by-play and color analysts on HockeyTV, and each game had public address announcing and music.

All in all, the showcase is simply an event that brings out the best in the Jets organization.

“Every year, the Detroit Showcase is a premier event for the league and one that keeps getting bigger and better,” said Jets director of communications Matt Mackinder. “The amount of scouts and college coaches at the rink and waiting to talk to player after each game is truly what this event is all about. Junior hockey is a catalyst for player exposure and events like these showcases provide that and then some to these hard-working players.”

This weekend, the Jets will head on the road to the USPHL Chicago Showcase, which runs Dec. 15-18 at two rinks in the suburban Chicago area.
