DIMONDALE, Mich. – The Metro Jets completed the 2018-19 regular season with a 5-1 win over the Lansing Wolves Sunday afternoon at The Summit Sports and Ice Complex.
With the victory, the Jets finish their first USPHL season on a 14-game winning streak, 39-4-1 overall and first in the league and the Great Lakes Conference.
Sunday, Jhuwon Davis scored twice and Michael Paul earned the win in goal, making 29 saves.
“It feels great to get a start like today and come up with the win,” said Paul. “The guys in the room were very supportive and made it easy for me on the ice. I definitely owe them one.
“We’ve been focusing on playoffs for a while now, and we just need to bring this confidence with us and play our game going into next weekend.”
Brady Hanson, Brodie Thornton and Jaylen Dziegelewski also scored, while Anthony Cinato and Rhett Limback recorded two assists.
“It wasn’t our best effort as a team early but as the game went on, we got better,” Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “We got some big saves from Michael Paul and timely goals when we needed them. Timely saves and timely goals – that’s a good recipe for success in this game. Our special teams made a big difference also. Our PP is starting to convert more, which we need moving forward into playoffs. We don’t like that we put ourselves into so many shorthanded situations, but our PK was great, as it’s been all year, but tonight the main reason for its success was our goalie.
“Can’t say enough about how well Michael Paul played tonight. He deserves a lot of the credit as this game could have easily been 5-1 in the other direction had we not got those saves.”
Garrison Weyh notched Lansing’s lone goal and Brendan Price stopped 25 shots in suffering the defeat between the pipes.
Next up for the Jets is the first round of the USPHL playoffs against Lansing. Game 1 is set for Friday night in Lansing (time TBD) with Game 2 back at Fraser Hockeyland Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. If a deciding Game 3 is needed, it would be played Sunday at Fraser at 12:45 p.m.
