Jets rookie Schaumburger signs NAHL tender with Knights

FRASER, Mich. – Not only was Matt Schaumburger part of the Metro Jets team that captured a national championship March 31 in suburban Chicago, but he also signed an NAHL tender during the championship week with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights.

The 18-year old from Canton, Mich., joined the Jets in December and appeared in 20 regular-season games, playing mostly on a line with Metro leading scorer Connor Inger and captain Griffin Sawyer, recording 30 points on 19 goals and 11 assists.

He also recorded six points in eight playoff games.

“I would describe myself as a power forward,” said Schaumburger. “I’m somebody who tries to do the right things out there. I take the puck hard to the net and try to get back on the backcheck hard. I think my hockey sense is the best part of my game. I think the game well and make smart plays.”

Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville sees Schaumburger as a player who believes in the Jets system and thus, has given himself higher-level opportunities.

“’Schaumy’ was a player this year that came in with the right mindset,” said Quenneville. “He wanted to learn and get better every day. His immediate skillset helped him find success early on, but the more he developed, the more he was rewarded. Like most players, sometimes they try to do too much too early, but Schaumy was receptive to details and utilized his size well in the areas to get rewarded.

“He was an integral part of our success again this year and another player to get a lot of attention from higher leagues. He ultimately felt that the Knights would give him the best opportunity and we wish him the best of luck moving forward.”

“Matt’s a skilled forward that has a high ceiling,” added Knights head coach Tom Kowal. “His numbers back that up, but his all-around play stands out as a great fit for our team. We’re excited to have Matt join the Knights family and have the opportunity to make our team better.”

Schaumburger is excited to get going with the Knights and has his eyes on a roster spot for the 2018-19 season.

“I know the Knights are a good organization that moves guys on,” Schaumburger said. “I’m just excited to be a part of it and give it my best.”

Schaumburger is the third Jets player from the 2017-18 season to sign an NAHL tender, joining defenseman Kyle Gierman (Northeast Generals) and forward Reggie Millette (Austin Bruins).
