Jets, MJDP, Jets Elite squads all score big victories over busy weekend on home ice

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Metro Jets, MJDP, and Jets Elite teams played seven games over the past week, coming out on the winning side in five contests.

Last Friday, the Jets Elite and MJDP squads downed the Decatur Blaze on home ice at Mount Clemens Ice Arena, while the Jets fell in overtime on the road against the Toledo Cherokee.

Then Saturday, a triple header at Mount Clemens saw the Jets Elite and MJDP teams each gain sweeps over Decatur and the Jets knock off the Columbus Mavericks.

Kicking off the weekend, Emrik Froding scored four goals for the Jets and Ugo Lollier had two assists at the Team Toledo IceHouse, but Wes Hatz won it 5-4 for the Cherokee at 4:16 of overtime.

Taylor White finished with 19 saves in goal as the Jets outshot Toledo 47-24.

Caleb Kril stopped 43 shots in the Toledo crease, while captain Jacob Ammar tallied a goal and two assists in the win.

Saturday afternoon, Carson MacKenzie turned aside all 17 shots he faced for the shutout in his junior hockey debut as the Jets blanked Columbus 12-0.

Froding had a goal and three assists, Tyler Bautko two goals and an assist, and Mason Cole scored twice for the Jets in the victory. Michael Lucia added three assists, and Lollier recorded a goal and two helpers.

Josh Boze, Ethan Hellman, Tyler Husted, and Alex Bedenko posted a goal and an assist each, and captain Devon Mastay and Carson Redd each contributed two assists.

Bryson Stern and Kyle Diehr combined on a 40-save effort for the Mavericks, who were outshot 52-17 in the game.

Friday night, the MJDP team used a 15-save shutout from goalie Austin Muirhead in a 5-0 win over Decatur.

Austin Combs and Jacques Lavrack each had a goal and two assists, while Royal St-Cyr and Jake Taylor registered a goal plus a helper in the win. Jacob Lawrence also scored.

Blaze goaltender Blake Schwendeman made 37 saves in suffering the defeat.

The MJDP team outshot Decatur 42-15.

In the finale Saturday afternoon, Alek John scored four goals, Robert Grasso netted three goals with an assist, and Oliver McClough added two goals and two assists in a 15-1 win over the Blaze.

Oka Forsberg went for a goal and three assists, Athen St-Cyr scored two goals, and Pierce Ashcroft and Joseph Martin each tallied a goal with a pair of assists.

Andrew Parmentier stopped 10 shots in goal, while Schwendeman made 39 saves before giving way to Gabe Rotruck, who finished with five saves.

Final shots were 59-11 in favor of the MJDP team.

Starting the week Wednesday night, the Jets Elite team fell 6-5 to the Motor City Gamblers at Big Boy Arena in Fraser.

Peter Spiridonakos and Lawrence each had a goal and an assist, while Benny Vanderdonck made 46 saves in net.

“I thought we did a lot of good things tonight, but unfortunately we just made a couple too many mistakes to overcome,” Jets associate coach Jake Howie said. “Hockey is a game of mistakes and how you react to a mistake to dictate what happens the rest of a shift. Unfortunately tonight, too many of our mistakes ended up in the back of our net, but that’s part of growing and learning as players at this level.

“There were plenty of good things that we can build on going forward.”

Blake Botterill, Jackson Hinkle, and Robert Poliski also scored for the Jets.

For Motor City, Dylan Statham’s second goal of the game at 17:04 of the third period stood as the game winner.

Braedyn Sullivan finished with 35 saves in goal for the Gamblers and Trevor Touchton went for a goal and a pair of assists.

Then Friday night, Botterill went off for four goals and three assists in a 12-2 romp over Decatur.

Spiridonakos added two goals and two assists, John Spiridonakos tacked on two goals and an assist, and Avery Byron had a goal and three helpers. Ryan Lemker contributed four assists.

McKenna Baker and Joey Goff each had a goal and an assist and Hinkle chipped in two assists.

In goal, Zach Robert and Eliot Duerr combined to make 18 saves.

Decatur goalie Zach Follo made 51 stops as the Jets outshot the Blaze 63-20.

Wrapping up the series Saturday morning, Duerr, Crew Petty, and Tabor Hatch needed to make only six saves in a 12-0 win as the Jets outshot Decatur 61-6.

Goff had two goals and two assists, Caleb Simpson four assists, and Landon Graham and Botterill two goals and a helper apiece.

Sean O’Connor added two goals and John Spiridonakos, Poliski, and Tyler Dix notched a goal and an assist.

Ayden Linville and Follo stopped 49 shots in the Decatur net.

This coming weekend, the Jets and MJDP play at 2 p.m. Friday at home and then the Jets Elite and MJDP teams are in Fort Wayne to play the Spacemen Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse. The Jets are in Battle Creek Saturday to visit the Kernels at 7 p.m. at The Rink Battle Creek.

Also Friday, the Kernels and Cincinnati Jr. Cyclones play at Mount Clemens with a 5 p.m. puck drop.
