ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Metro Jets scored two goals in the second period and hung on to defeat the New England Stars 2-1 Wednesday night in the second game of the Pool B round robin at the Fraser Cup National Tournament at Canlan Ice Sports.
Kyle Gierman scored on a power play 1:30 into the second and then assisted on Reggie Millette’s game-winner at 17:13 after the Stars’ Ryan Gauvin tied it at 8:20.
Millette also drew an assist on Gierman’s goal as each posted two-point games.
“That was not a clean game for us tonight,” said Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “We were fighting pucks, making poor decisions and were unnecessarily distracted. We weren’t able to get the bounce we needed tonight to open the game up, and that happens this time of year. In the end, it doesn’t matter how we played or how we won. We won, that’s all that matters, and we are in the semifinals now.”
“We will regroup and make adjustments to get ready for another chance at this. That’s all we can ask for.”
Jet’s goalieBrian Tallieu made 14 saves, while New England net minder Andrew Ghimpeteanu stopped 40 in suffering the defeat.
“It always feels good to come away with a win, regardless of how you do it.” said Gierman (pictured). “We just have to take it one game at a time and play how we have played all year. All we have to do is show up, focus on ourselves, and play Metro hockey.”
The Jets finish the round robin Thursday night at 8:30p.m. Eastern against the Texas Jr. Brahmas.
