WOOSTER, Ohio – The Metro Jets continued their strong start with a dominating 9-1 win Saturday night over the Wooster Oilers at the Alice Noble Ice Arena.
After the Oilers’ Hunter Hillebrecht scored a power-play goal just 59 seconds into the first period, the Jets tallied nine unanswered goals for the victory.
“We knew they were going to bring energy at the drop of the puck being their home opener,” said Jets associate coach Jamie Lovell. “I was really happy how we responded to their fluky power-play goal, answering back and turning in a good road period and taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
“We didn’t get frustrated despite feeling like we were outplaying them, yet still only up a goal late in the second period. We knew our pressure would eventually lead to goals, and it did.”
Joey Bruce and Anthony Cinato each posted two goals and an assist, while Devlin Macaulay added a goal and two assists, Jeremy Schwartz a goal and an assist and Brodie Thornton with a pair of assists.
Rhett Limback, Justin Song and Jaylen Dziegelewski scored single goals as well.
“We responded well to the first goal they scored, got the first period out of the way up by one after a long drive,” said Macaulay (pictured). “Most importantly, we played our way as far as passing and moving the puck and getting shots on net consistently.”
Fredrik Meurling started in goal and then gave way to William Augustine for the third period.
“We got a big, timely save by Freddy when the score was only 3-1 and that could have changed the game and given Wooster some life, but after that, our ‘D’ did a great job getting pucks through to the net and forwards did a great job getting traffic and banging in the rebounds,” said Lovell.
“It was an easy game from a coaching perspective as everyone was on their game, so I could just roll the lines and get everyone in. Coaches love those games – less work managing the bench.”
Zackary Freiburger took the loss in net for Wooster.
Moving forward, the Jets now get set to host the Toledo Cherokee next Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. back at Fraser Hockeyland. Streaming of the game will be available on www.HockeyTV.com.
“With a lot of young and new players on the team, everyone is gelling very well and buying in to the system very quickly,” added Macaulay.
