Another edition of USPHL Detroit Showcase wraps to rave reviews on, off the ice at Mount Clemens Ice Arena

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The 2024 USPHL Detroit Showcase, the largest showcase event in the league, ran five days at Mount Clemens Ice Arena from Nov. 21-25, spanning 51 games across the two-sheet facility.

Once again, all reviews were positive for one of the USPHL’s signature events, hosted each November by the Metro Jets.

“Overall, it was another great event,” said Jets GM Justin Quenneville. “I would like to thank everyone from our staff, to the rink, and all the volunteers. You don’t run a smooth five-day event with hockey from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. without having hard working and efficient people. Our event is the largest premier showcase in the country every year and we are proud to see the continued support by many scouts.

“Our Jets teams represented themselves professionally and had a lot of success on the ice as well, but seeing so many scouts talking to all the players is what makes this showcase complete every year.”

On the ice, all three Jets teams showed well against some of the league’s top competition.

“The MJDP is very young and after the first half of the season, I’m very happy where we are at,” said Jets associate coach Jake Howie. “We played a lot of good hockey teams this month between the Fort Wayne and Detroit showcases and did a lot of good things. I can’t wait to see our progressions in the second half.”

“I thought we did a better job handling the puck and making better decisions with it,” Jets associate coach Danny Vanderwiel said. “We did an OK job managing our emotions and staying out of the box, so still some room for improvement there. Again, I thought our power play looked great. We were moving the puck well and scored multiple power-play goals over the weekend, so that was huge for us.

“I also feel that the group is really coming together and starting to buy in to the process. You can tell they want to get better, not just as individuals, but as a unit.”

Jets crowned 2024 Coney Cup champs after split with Toledo; MJDP, Jets Elite teams take strides at USPHL Fort Wayne Showcase

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Coney Cup is home at Mount Clemens Ice Arena.

By virtue of their home-and-home split last Friday and Saturday with the Toledo Cherokee and also winning their first meeting of the season last month, the Metro Jets are the 2024 Coney Cup champions.

The trophy was created two seasons back to further the years-long rivalry between the Jets and Cherokee.

“We weren’t the better team Friday night and we wanted to respond Saturday,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “We need to clean things up and we want to keep getting better every day.

“We’ve got a good group and we’ve got some mettle with these guys. Even Friday night being down the whole game, we kept pushing and we had a chance to win the hockey game at the end. We didn’t, but on Saturday, we responded and I think we’ll keep getting better and keep developing.”

Friday night at the Team Toledo Ice House, Toledo eked out a 4-3 win, the Jets’ first loss of the 2024-25 season.

Sutton Majeske recorded a goal and two assists, Brycen Smith had a goal and an assist and Tim Monaghan also scored.

Jets goaltender Austin Muirhead finished with 38 saves.

For Toledo, Aidan Gonzalez had two goals and an assist, Caden Glamkowski and Trevin Johnson added goals, and Caleb Kril made 33 saves in goal.

Then Saturday night back home, the Jets rebounded with a 2-1 win.

Smith and Pierce Ashcroft scored and Andrew Parmentier stopped 29 shots for the win in goal.

Gerdas Paulaskas broke Parmentier’s shutout bid at 14:58 of the third period and Toledo goalie Austin Nowak made 37 saves.

“The guys really wanted the win,” said Jets captain Jack Rivera. “We worked hard, kept pucks low, and our forwards and ‘D’ did their jobs. The result showed that. Playing in Toledo is a tough environment, but the guys showed some grit, showed character, and didn’t let that affect them. They put that in the past and Saturday was a new day. We put our hearts out there.”

Also this past weekend, the MJDP and Jets Elite teams played in the USPHL Fort Wayne Showcase at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse in Fort Wayne, Ind.

MJDP RESULTS

Friday, Nov. 8 – MJDP 2, Chicago Cougars 1

Saturday, Nov. 9 – Chicago Crush 5, MJDP 1

Saturday, Nov. 9 – MJDP 4, Decatur Blaze 2

Sunday, Nov. 10 – Florida Eels 3, MJDP 2

“I think MJDP is getting better with every game we play,” Jets associate coach Jake Howie said. “Really happy with our penalty kill over the weekend, as it’s taken some major steps forward in the past few weeks. I thought our forecheck was good this weekend, and the ability to play below the other teams goaline, spin off of checks and take pucks to the net. I love the offensive chances we are generating, now it’s about capitalizing on the opportunities.”

JETS ELITE RESULTS

Friday, Nov. 8 – Chicago Crush 1, Jets Elite 0

Friday, Nov. 8 – Fort Wayne Spacemen 3, Jets Elite 1

Saturday, Nov. 9 – Jets Elite 3, Florida Eels 2 (OT)

Sunday, Nov. 10 – Chicago Cougars 7, Jets Elite 3

Sunday, Nov. 10 – Fort Wayne Spacemen 4, Jets Elite 1

“Positives from this weekend, I thought our power play looked really good; we were generating good scoring chances there,” Jets associate coach Danny Vanderwiel said. “I think there is a lot that we can learn from this weekend. For example, a quick start and not having to play from behind from the jump is important. Our game vs. the Cougars got away from us early. We made a good push in the third, but it was not enough. Another example being in a game leading for most of it and having it tied last minute of the game and knowing we can persevere and still find a way to come out on top.

“Obviously wish we were coming home with more of the 10 points that were up for grabs, but I think the experience gained will go a long way down the stretch.”

This weekend, the Jets host the Red River Spartans Saturday night at 4:45 p.m. and the MJDP is on the road to play the Battle Creek Kernels Saturday at 7 p.m. from The Rink Battle Creek.

The Jets Elite team is idle this weekend.

All three teams then gear up for the annual USPHL Detroit Showcase Nov. 21-25 at Mount Clemens Ice Arena.

Ten games sees trio of Jets teams all go undefeated in regulation time as calendar hits November

/MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – A 10-game stretch last weekend and into this week saw the Metro Jets, MJDP and Metro Jets Elite teams all go undefeated in regulation time.

The lone setback was an MJDP overtime loss on Sunday at home to the Decatur Blaze.

Hitting the road to suburban Nashville, the Metro Jets swept the Red River Spartans Friday-Sunday in games played at the Ford Ice Center in Clarksville, Tenn.

Friday night, the Jets took a 7-1 win as Tim Monaghan went for two goals and an assist, Sutton Majeske a goal and two assists, and Jack Noonan a goal with an assist.

Brycen Smith added three assists and Matt Brougham, Harry Dembowski and Pierce Ashcroft all scored. AJ Zaccagni and Luka Pivec chipped in two assists apiece.

Andrew Parmentier made 22 saves in goal for the win.

For the Spartans, Gino Indelicato scored the lone goal and goaltender Andrew Young finished with 42 saves.

Then Saturday, Evan Cote and Ashcroft each had two goals and an assist in a 9-2 win.

Jake Taylor, Dembowski and Smith all had a goal and an assist, and Jaxon Stone, River Lewis, Alek John and Brougham each tallied two helpers.

In goal, Austin Muirhead made 26 saves and added an assist in the victory.

Blake Martino and Jesse James Aitken scored for Red River and Young and Nicolas Bonneville combined to make 51 saves between the pipes.

Finishing up Sunday afternoon, Stone and Majeske both recorded a goal and an assist and captain Jack Rivera, Isaiah Winters and Smith all scored one apiece in a 5-1 win to sweep the series.

John added two assists and Rostislav Efremov turned aside 25 shots in goal.

Indelicato scored for the Spartans and Young made 42 stops.

“That was a really good weekend of hockey displayed by our guys,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “Don’t let the final scores of each game fool you, though. Nashville is a strong team and the games were closer than that, especially the last game. Each game, the scores were tied after one period, but we started to separate ourselves in the second with our effort on the forecheck and puck management in the offensive zone. We got better and better as the games went on and it was fun to watch the plays we were making in all three zones.

“We definitely had breakdowns and made mistakes, but they didn’t hurt because our goaltending was excellent all weekend. We have a three-headed monster in net and our guys have full confidence in all three goalies back there, which is a great feeling as a player to know you can rely on those guys back there to make that timely big save when we make mistakes. That being said, we made a few too many mistakes to my liking and we need to learn from those moving forward. Having great goaltending makes it hard sometimes for our players to learn from their mistakes because it doesn’t end up in a goal against, but we will do our best as coaches and as team this week as we prepare for two big games against our division rival in Toledo next weekend.”

On home ice at Mount Clemens Ice Arena, the MJDP team opened with a 10-1 win Friday night over Decatur.

Chris Otero had three goals and two assists and Raphael Belley-Pelletier added two goals and two assists to back Ethan Carlone’s 30 saves in goal.

Jaret George tallied the Decatur goal and Cottreau finished with 27 saves.

Then Sunday afternoon, Liam Hilts was the overtime hero, lifting Decatur to a 4-3 win.

Otero, Lobanov and Maracle all scored and Evan Peacock stopped 23 shots in the MJDP crease.

Wrapping up the first part of November this past Tuesday afternoon, the MJDP used two late goals in the third period from Raphael Belley-Pelletier (game winner at 17:15) and Brisson to snap a 2-2 tie and held on to beat the Motor City Gamblers 4-2 on home ice.

Martin and Chris Kobayashi also scored and Carlone made 30 saves.

Braeden Goers and Kyle Boring netted the Motor City goals and Luka Straser stopped 34 shots in net.

“I think we played four hard-fought games in the last five days, and to be able to come out with seven of the eight available points is a nice step for this group,” said Jets associate coach Jake Howie. “I look at the steps we’ve taken from the beginning of the year to now and am happy with the growth within this group, but with that said, we have a younger group this year and still have some growing to do. Our forecheck has been much better lately, and guys have been reloading over pucks to hem teams in. We’ll need another strong effort this weekend with four games in Fort Wayne.”

The Jets Elite team started the weekend with a 7-0 win over Decatur Friday afternoon at Mount Clemens Ice Arena as Tabor Hatch was hot to go with a 15-save shutout.

Jarrett LaGrow collected three goals, Tyler Dix added a pair, and Ronnie Lubbers went for a goal and an assist.
