Jets captain, three-year veteran Rivera finds perfect fit for college hockey with Northwood commitment

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – After three seasons with the Metro Jets, it’s time for Jack Rivera to take his game to a higher level.

Rivera, serving as the Jets captain this season, has committed to attend and play college hockey at Northwood University, a school located in Midland, Mich.

“The opportunity presented itself when their coach approached me with interest in my defensive play,” said Rivera, a Macomb, Mich., native who turns 21 on March 14. “I am most looking forward to playing for a hockey program and school that holds themselves to high standards in athletics and academics.”

From 2022-24, Rivera starred with the Metro Jets Development Program (MJDP), putting up eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points in 82 regular-season games, in addition to five goals and three assists for eight points in 15 USPHL postseason games.

This season with the Jets, Rivera has collected eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in 35 games.

“On behalf of the entire Jets organization, we would like to congratulate Jack on his decision and future at Northwood,” said Jets head coach and GM Justin Quenneville. “His choice was not an easy one as he had several options to play and attend college around the country. In the end, Jack felt this was the best environment for him with regard to all the things that mattered most for his situation academically, hockey and financially. In the end, Northwood presented an offer he couldn’t refuse and we couldn’t be happier for him.

“Northwood is getting a true leader and person who has really developed on and off the ice to another level. Jack is a true testament to committing to the process when he started out with our Development Program and now graduates junior hockey as a captain and overall player ready to take his game to the college level.”

Rivera added that this commitment has been far from a one-man show.

“The Jets’ coaching and development have helped me not only improve my hockey skills and decision-making, but also have taught me to hold myself accountable and push myself to be the best version of myself, on and off the ice,” said Rivera. “Everything they have done for me will be invaluable in my transition to college hockey.”

Jets Elite, MJDP teams pick up crucial weekday wins over Motor City, Elite falls to Fort Wayne, Jets get two points over Cincinnati to conclude four-game week

/MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. — It was a light schedule for the Metro Jets, MJDP and Metro Jets Elite teams over the past few days as just four games were played between the three squads.

Kicking off the action Wednesday afternoon at Big Boy Arena in nearby Fraser, the Jets Elite used three goals and an assist from Landon Graham and 24 saves from Tabor Hatch to take a 6-2 win over the Motor City Gamblers.

Cory Anderson added a goal and an assist and Cam Maxwell and Tyler Dix also scored.

For the Gamblers, Kibwe Weaver and Carl Mujagic scored and goalie Tyler Houle made 39 saves.

Then Thursday afternoon at Mount Clemens Ice Arena, the Jets Elite team took a 4-1 lead into the third period but lost 5-4 to the Fort Wayne Spacemen.

Dix scored two more goals and Jarrett LaGrow and Owen Coulter added one each. Anderson chipped in two assists and goalie Cam Cyrus made 36 saves.

For Fort Wayne, Robert Gross scored twice, while Orlando Soergel went for a goal and an assist and Landyn Ringenberg and Colin Robison recorded one goal apiece.

Will Moynahan tacked on three assists and Austin Schaertel made 29 saves in goal.

“I thought the effort could have been a little bit better,” said Jets associate coach Danny Vanderwiel. “Happy to get the two points. Still some things we need to tighten up here in the final stretch.”

Also Wednesday in Fraser, the MJDP team beat Motor City 7-1 behind two goals from Clovis Gamelin and a 39-save performance between the pipes from Ethan Carlone.

Max Rastello had a goal and an assist, Chase Martin tacked on two assists, and William Lobanov, Alessandro Evangelista, Jacob Belley-Pelletier and Chris Kobayashi added goals of their own.

Braeden Goers scored the Gamblers’ goal and goaltender Galvin Reagan finished with 52 saves.

“The development program played a complete game today,” Jets associate coach Jake Howie said. “Hockey is a game of mistakes and don’t get me wrong, we had our breakdowns, but we recovered well and fixed our mistakes. It was nice having all 21 guys pulling on the rope and I thought it was a full team effort to get the job done today. And it’s really nice to see a bit of an offensive surge in the last few games.

“I really like the way we’re playing going into the home stretch before the playoffs.”

Finishing up the weekend at home Friday afternoon, the Jets defeated the Cincinnati Jr. Cyclones 8-0 as Jack Noonan went for the hat trick and two assists and Andrew Parmentier and Rostislav Efremov combined on a 20-save shutout in goal.

Luka Pivec had a goal and two assists and Harry Dembowski, Jack Schnur, Pierce Ashcroft and Sutton Majeske tallied one each to go along with two assists from AJ Zaccagni.

Cincinnati goaltenders Caleb Whitson and Nicholas Wah made 45 saves.

“There was an incredible difference between tonight’s game and last Sunday’s game in every aspect,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “Despite winning last weekend, we were not happy with how we played, but tonight was a very good response from our group. Our execution was on point. Our decisions with the puck were quick and almost every time, the correct one.

“I think the players wanted to make a statement to the staff that last weekend was an anomaly and what we saw here tonight from them is more to their identity as players and as a team. They were hungry to score and when they lost the puck, they wanted it back immediately, not even letting Cincinnati get out of their zone with possession.

“It was fun to watch from behind the bench and if we continue like this, we will be a tough team to beat and our players will be receiving plenty of attention from schools at the next level.”

Next week, the Jets Elite and MJDP teams are on the road to play the Chicago Cougars. The Elite plays Friday at noon Central from the Edge Ice Arena and Saturday at 4:15 p.m. from Triphahn Arena. We’ve been stressing to the guys as a staff here the importance of maximizing your points down the stretch to give yourself the best shot in the playoffs. Ultimately, I thought we were overall very solid this weekend, but our special teams left some to be desired. That being said, the power play scored a big goal late in the Sunday game to give us lead and ultimately, the win.

“Moving forward now, it’s just about being a tough team to play against night in night out and treating every game like it’s a do-or-die playoff game.”

“Hopefully, we can keep it rolling into the week as we are right back at it Wednesday and Thursday.”

Veteran Jets goalie Muirhead sets new USPHL Premier career record for shutouts

The United States Premier Hockey League congratulates Metro Jets goaltender Austin Muirhead, who set a new career record in shutouts on Monday with a share of the 4-0 shutout victory against the Chicago Cougars on Dec. 9.

In doing so, Muirhead – with two shutouts this season, plus six in 2023-24 and three in 2022-23 – bypassed two other former Metro Jets goaltenders, Will Augustine and Taylor White, who had 10 shutouts apiece. Also setting that mark were former Charlotte Rush goaltender David Battisti and former Boston Junior Bruins goaltender Kyle Myer.

On Monday, Dec. 9, Muirhead made 14 saves on 14 shots from the 10:07 mark of the second period to the final buzzer of the win over the Cougars. Rostislav Efremov had started the game and made 12 saves on 12 shots from the opening of the game to the 10:07 mark of the second.

Muirhead first joined the Jets organization in 2022-23, splitting time between the Metro Jets Development Program (MJDP) and the former Metro Hockey Club (MHC). He spent the entire 2023-24 season with the MJDP and made his Nationals debut in Utica, N.Y. He returned the next year to Utica and the Nationals with MJDP. He has been a full-time Metro Jets goalie this year and is 6-1-0-0 with a .938 save percentage. His career total record is 27-7-1-2 with a .939 save percentage.
