WEST DUNDEE, Ill. – The MJDP picked “a hard-earned loser point,” according to Jets associate coach Jamie Lovell after the MJDP lost 4-3 in a shootout Saturday night to the Chicago Cougars at Canlan Ice Sports.

Down 3-1 late in the third period, Hugo Fonovic (pictured front) brought the MJDP to within 3-2 at 12:31 and then Nick McDougall (pictured below) tied it 3-3 at 15:55.

“We were completely outplayed in the first period and lucky to come out of it tied,” Lovell said. “It’s amazing that we weren’t behind by 2-3 goals, and it’s a credit to Daniel Miscavish for doing his job and keeping us in the game. Chicago is a much-improved team with all their new additions and our guys just couldn’t handle their pressure for two periods and trying to be too cute when we did get offensive chances.

“We challenged them going into the third period, and they responded. I was very proud in how they responded.”

Tim Washburn scored in the first period for the MJDP and Miscavish finished with 33 saves between the pipes.

Chicago’s Asher Motew also made 33 saves and stopped Kam Hellman, Max Hartwell and Herman Ahokas in the shootout. Simon Motew scored the only goal for the Cougars.

“I think this was a good learning weekend for this group and, hopefully, now they understand what it’s going to take if you want to be successful come playoff time,” Lovell said.

The MJDP is now idle until this coming Tuesday when they play the Lake Erie Bighorns at 3:30 p.m. from the ErieBank Sports Park.
