FRASER, Mich. – Joey Bruce’s hat trick and Fredrik Meurling’s 17-save shutout propelled the Metro Jets to an 8-0 win over the Toledo Cherokee Saturday night at Fraser Hockeyland.
Bruce added an assist for a four-point game as the Jets swept the home-and-home weekend series with Toledo.
“I didn’t really have to do much on a couple of them,” said Bruce. “Jhuwon (Davis) set me up perfectly. I thought he played an outstanding game and is an awesome linemate. It’s easy to do my job when I have guys like that out there.”
Davis added a goal and three assists, while Jets captain Jeremy Schwartz, the third member of that line, posted a pair of assists on the night.
Conner Graham and Joey Demarte each recorded a goal and an assist and Brandon Graham and Nick Ceccarini scored single goals.
Tanner Neill and Tyler German registered two assists apiece.
The Jets outshot Toledo 54-17.
Toledo goalie Parker Simpson made 46 saves in suffering the defeat.
“The scoreboard was nice after the game, but I thought we were fighting the puck in the first period and not capitalizing on a lot of our chances,” said Metro coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “We don’t like to let teams linger around and Toledo pushed back. Luckily, Freddy did a good job early in the second shutting the door and giving us a chance to get in it and when we did, we came in with a fury.”
Metro scored six goals in a 5:39 span during the second-period explosion.
The Jets next play a home-and-home with the Lansing Wolves, starting next Friday night on the road and wrapping Saturday night at Fraser Hockeyland with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
The Metro Jets DP Team plays tomorrow on the road against the Tri City Icehawks in Bay City. Game time is set for noon.
