DIMONDALE, Mich. – The Metro Jets started slow but rallied to down the Lansing Wolves 3-1 Friday night at The Summit Sports & Ice Complex.
Scoreless after 20 minutes, Anthony Cinato (pictured) and Matt Cruz scored late in the second period to give the Jets a 2-0 lead after two periods.
After Lansing’s Jacob Deratany made it a 2-1 game at 17:35 of the third period, breaking Fredrik Meurling’s shutout bid, Jets captain Jeremy Schwartz added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the game.
“In all honesty, we did not play that well,” said Jets assistant coach Randy Wilson. “We had some good shifts but didn’t play very clean for a large part of the game. Quite frankly, Freddy literally won the game for us. Can’t call it any different than that.”
Meurling finished with 39 saves.
“We started out slow, but once we got that first goal, our attitude definitely changed, and we started going harder on them,” added Schwartz. “Our biggest positive from tonight’s game was the boys finishing strong and winning the game. Tomorrow night, we need the boys to come out stronger to start the game.”
Lansing outshot Metro 40-24.
Jeremy Skaife made 21 saves in goal for the Wolves.
The Jets host the Wooster Oilers tomorrow night at Fraser Hockeyland, while the Metro Jets DP heads to Pittsburgh for the first of two with the Pittsburgh Vengeance at 6:30 p.m.
