MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The MJDP scored three goals in the third period to pull away and defeat the Detroit Fighting Irish 5-2 Friday night at Mount Clemens Ice Arena.
After the MJDP took a 1-0 lead on a Nick Twombley goal at 12:16 of the first period, Bryce Iott tied the game just 1:04 into the second period for the Fighting Irish.
Matt Vanderworp put the Jets on top to stay at 15:13 of the middle period, while Steven Miller, Carson Finney (pictured front) and Sam Westerberg (pictured below) tallied in the third period to put the game away.
“We’ll take the win,” Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell said. “I think we were on our heels a little bit for the first 10 minutes of the first period and if it wasn’t for (goaltender) Ethan Ryan, it could easily have been 3-0 for the Fighting Irish. Credit to him for keeping us in there and then we got that first goal.”
Ryan finished with 31 saves, only allowing Iott’s goal and a Jay Kostecke goal with 3:50 to play in the third period. He also drew an assist on Finney’s goal.

“I felt good out there, and this was a big win for us,” said Ryan. “We have a rivalry going with (Detroit) and we need the points in our division. The boys played great tonight.”
Fighting Irish goalie Alex Herman made 26 saves in suffering the defeat.
Next up for the MJDP is a 5:30 p.m. game Saturday on the road in Fort Wayne from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse.
