After two seasons with Jets organization, blueliner Lewis commits to NCAA D-III Anna Maria

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – River Lewis played his youth hockey in his home state of Arizona before a season at the renowned Shattuck-St. Mary’s prep school in Minnesota.

The past two seasons, the Chandler, Ariz., native has developed his game with the USPHL’s Metro Jets organization to be ready for the grind of college hockey.

Last week, Lewis took another giant step, committing to NCAA Division III Anna Maria College, a school located in Paxton, Mass., about 55 miles west of Boston.

“This opportunity presented itself to me a little bit after the season ended,” said Lewis. “I am looking forward to just getting started, building a bond with my new teammates like I had with the boys at Metro, and just taking advantage of all the opportunities Anna Maria provides.”

Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville said this is a deserved opportunity for Lewis.

“River had an opportunity to make his NCAA commitment because of his versatility as a player and taking advantage of our platform,” said Quenneville. “He had a great two years here starting with our MJDP program and playing for the Jets last season. He’s big, strong, has a big shot, and can play forward or ‘D.’ Anna Maria is getting a player with great potential and a quality young man. We wish River the best of luck.”

Over his two seasons in Mount Clemens, Lewis registered 13 goals and 27 assists for 40 points in 64 games, consistently improving his skill set on a daily basis.

“The Jets really helped me in many ways,” Lewis said. “The organization helped me understand my role as a player and as a teammate as well as helping me mentally and providing me with everything a player needs to develop and improve their game.”

In making a milestone, life-changing decision such as this one, Lewis knows it was far from a one-man show.

“I have to thank my entire my family; they all helped me get to this point,” said Lewis. “I also want to thank Coach Q, Jamie, Howie, Danny, and all my past coaches who have helped me become the player I am today, my teammates for pushing me every single day, and lastly and most importantly, I want to thank God.”

Jets’ 2024-25 season comes to heartbreaking end at USPHL Nationals

WAYNE, N.J. — The Metro Jets’ season is over.

After starting out 2-0 in the USPHL National Championships at the Ice Vault, the Jets lost 6-0 to the Springfield Pics in the final round robin game Saturday night and were eliminated from going to the semifinals.

The Jets beat the Tampa Bay Juniors 4-3 in a shootout Thursday afternoon and then defeated the PAL Jr. Islanders 2-0 Friday afternoon.

Opening up against Tampa Bay, Jaxon Stone scored at 19:30 of the third period to pull the Jets into a 3-3 tie and then Pierce Ashcroft and Luka Pivec scored in the shootout to give the Jets a 4-3 win.

Rostislav Efremov made 38 saves, and then both in the shootout for the win between the pipes.

Isaiah Winters scored two goals, Stone had an assist for a two-point game, and Ashcroft added two assists.

“We will take the two points,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “It’s not ideal in this format; there is very little room for error. We played well in the second period but took our foot off the gas and almost let it get away. Proud of how we battled at the end to tie and got a lucky bounce.

“You need some luck every now and then to win championships. We definitely got that today.”

Jason Johnson posted a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay and Dawson Osborn and Aki Jokela added goals.

Juniors goalie Savva Serdiuk finished with 29 saves.

In Friday’s win, Stone scored 25 seconds into the game and Evan Cote scored in the second period to back Efremov’s 25-save shutout.

“Played well today,” Lovell said. “Obviously got a good start scoring on the first shift. I felt we got even better as the game went on but just weren’t getting rewarded on the scoreboard.

“We are going to need to keep elevating our game as each game from here on out has to treated as an elimination game.”

Avery Hite stopped 35 shots in goal for the Jr. Islanders.

Wrapping up Saturday night, Springfield exploded for four goals in the second period to top the Jets and advance to the semifinals.

Efremov made 24 saves through 28:16 before Austin Muirhead took over and stopped 12 shots over the final 26:45.

Jacob Carey had two goals and two assists for the Pics, while Ryan Zabchuk added a goal and an assist and Chris Foster, Christian McKinley and River Sciarrotta scored single goals. Nick Zanin and Justin Hooper collected two assists apiece.

Springfield goaltender Troy Huber pitched a 31-save shutout.

The Jets qualified for the USPHL National Championships for the seventh straight year, tying a league record, and won the Great Lakes Division regular-season and playoff titles this season as well.

“First off, I would like to thank all the coaches, scouts, staff, game day staff, volunteers, our amazing facility and Jets family. We are a proud organization that carries over 35 years of rich history and success.

“Sunday was a bad day to have a bad day, but we leave USPHL Nationals with a 2-1 record and heads held high. These nationals don’t reward the best teams, just the better team that day. That’s life. We ran into a strong group that day that got hot at the right time, they got some lucky bounces and had a hot goalie. But I measure success by sample size and this year’s path and group was special.

“We faced adversity, a difficult schedule and won a hard-fought battle to win the toughest division championship in the country for an opportunity to fight for another national championship.

“A huge thank you to the all the players with all three teams who committed to our program and made significant strides as the season progressed. This group of young men came in and improved tremendously. In a rebuild season, you never know how fast or how long it will take your group to develop, but we had a special group this year that showed why we were a top contender again. Our loyalty was proved again by investing in our group from Day 1. We didn’t waver or bring in players down the stretch like other teams.

“None of this is possible without surrounding yourself with a top-tier support system that believes in our model. And once again, our hockey staff showed why we have the best environment for players. The commitment from our president Pete Cammick and our coaches Jamie Lovell, Randy Wilson, Jake Howie, Danny Vanderwiel is what sets us apart. I am lucky to work with them every day and be challenged to continue elevating our model.

“In the end, we continue to work for our players and have more college commitments to be announced soon. Thank you to all and we are excited for this upcoming offseason with new things to announce for next year soon.” – Jets GM Justin Quenneville

#USPHLNationals Elite Team Preview: Metro Jets

The Metro Jets’ first-year USPHL Elite program had quite the blueprint to work off of. They were borne of an organization that has been one of the most successful in the USPHL Premier. In fact, the Jets’ Premier team has the all-time best winning percentage in regular season play at .874.

The Jets organization has had three junior teams before, as they fielded the Jets, the Metro Jets Development Program (MJDP) and Metro Hockey Club (MHC) in 2020-21, but this is the first time the Jets have fielded an Elite team. They were very successful in winning the inaugural Midwest Elite title at 31-12-1-0.

In the playoffs, they faced a Decatur Blaze team that had several players with USPHL Premier experience, but were just able to edge the Blaze in two overtime games, 5-4 and 3-2, on March 10 and 11.

“Earning a sweep in our divisional play was impressive given the challenge they faced with a strong Decatur lineup. It was a test our players knew would be a challenge, but they kept to the game plan and were rewarded for it,” said Tina Ciraulo, the Jets Elite Associate Head Coach. “We are excited for our guys with all the work they put in this season. They bought into the process and developed over the season to prepare for an opportunity like this. It was truly a full team effort from top to bottom.”

The twins John and Peter Spiridonakos put up five and four points, respectively. McKenna Baker scored three points, including an OT goal. Hunter Folgmann had the other overtime winner.

In net, Elliot Duerr made 50 saves on 52 shots, and Zachary Robert stopped 29 of 33 in net. While the Elite players are new to the Nationals, the Jets staff have, in some cases, six years of experience at that level.

“We are fortunate that we have experience in playing for National titles,” said Ciraulo, who joined the Jets coaching staff in 2020-21. That year, with MHC, she became the first female head coach of a USPHL Premier team. “Therefore, we have been using our model to continue to work on things and with our other Jets teams attending, it gives us a chance to use different inter-squad practices to touch on details. [The 10-day break] also allows our guys to properly heal up those end of the year bumps and bruises to be 100 percent heading into Nationals.”

Against the Jets in the Seeding Round will be the Atlanta MadHatters and Potomac Patriots, certainly two tough customers. The Jets fell 2-0 to the MadHatters in the USPHL Tampa Showcase in January. The Jets went 5-2-0-0 against the other Midwest Elite representatives the Chicago Crush. They also took losses, however, to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, the Islanders Hockey Club and Tampa Bay Juniors.

“We know all the teams will be strong. We stay loyal to our players and have not added any Premier players,” Ciraulo said. “So we are hoping our consistency and chip on our shoulder playing these teams will give us an edge.”

Metro Jets survive close three-game series, earn seventh straight USPHL Nationals berth

The Metro Jets have qualified for the USPHL Nationals for the seventh straight time, tying the record for consecutive qualifications in the current USPHL Premier with the Charlotte Rush and Florida Eels (2018-24).

The Jets have now qualified every year from 2019 to 2025.

It was a back-and-forth track meet on Sunday afternoon in Mount Clemens as the Jets won 5-4. The Toledo Cherokee came back from being down 4-2 in the second period to even it up going into the third. Tim Monaghan scored the GWG in the third period. Alek John and Pierce Ashcroft each scored one goal and one assist, and Sutton Majeske had two assists. For Toledo, Anthony DiFlora scored a hat trick. In net, the Jets’ Rostislav Efremov stopped 37 of 41 shots and Toledo’s Caleb Kril stopped 35 of 40 shots.

In their first two games, the Jets fell on Friday to the Cherokee by a 2-1 score in overtime. They bounced back for a Game 2 win on Saturday with a 2-1 regulation win of their own.

The Metro Jets captured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Nationals. Check out their schedule here.

.“We are excited to have qualified for Nationals again this season. In particular this year because of myriad of factors,” said Jets GM Justin Quenneville. “It was more challenging to win out in our difficult division for one, but we also have a younger group this year in this rebuild of 20-plus new players on the Jets. Yes, we have several MJDP players on the roster from last years’ National run, but we had a lot more adversity with our difficult travel schedule and injuries down the stretch. This is a testament to our players and coaching staff continuing to build towards our goal to return for another opportunity. Everyone contributed and it showed the last few weeks.

“We look forward to the next challenge in Wayne.”

MJDP defeats Motor City, Toledo; Jets Elite drops Motor City; Jets upend Columbus, lose to Toledo in recent action

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – It was a busy five-game stretch for all three Metro Jets teams over the past week.

What’s better is the teams came away with four wins when all was said and done.

Starting out with a Wednesday double header at Mount Clemens Ice Arena, the MJDP edged the Motor City Gamblers 4-3 and the Jets defeated the Columbus Mavericks by an 8-1 count.

Noah Bodurka had two goals and an assist for the MJDP, while Alessandro Evangelista added a goal and an assist and Clovis Gamelin also scored to back Evan Peacock’s 23 saves in goal.

For Motor City, Alex Khammo, Braeden Goers and Ignacy Drozd scored, Alexander Yeung and Ethan Gray each tacked on two assists, and goaltender Tyler Houle made 38 saves.

Then in the Jets win, Sutton Majeske went for a goal and two assists and Jake Taylor and Luka Pivec each added a goal and an assist as Austin Muirhead made 14 saves between the pipes.

Evan Cote, River Lewis, Alek John, Jaxon Stone and Tim Monaghan also scored and Brycen Smith and Isaiah Winters chipped in a pair of assists apiece.

Ward and Luska added assists for two-point games and Sean O’Connor added a pair of helpers.

“It was a big two points that the boys got today,” Jets associate coach Danny Vanderwiel said. “We came out well but once it became 3-1, we took our foot off the game for the second half of the second period. With that being said, we did a great job responding by coming out in the third and not allowing them to get back into the game.

“It is critical for a team to be able to close out games and not allow an opponent to get back into it when you get to an early lead. Especially going forward as we prepare for playoffs, we need to play a full 60 minutes and finish every shift.”

Tadd Siglow posted the Gamblers’ lone goal and goalie Phillip Tate made 38 saves.

Friday night at the Team Toledo IceHouse, the Jets dropped a 5-2 decision to the Toledo Cherokee.

Majeske and Pivec scored and Andrew Parmentier finished with 30 saves in net.

“Tough loss tonight,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “The effort was there, just not the execution. Too many miscues on pucks at crucial moments. We had opportunities and just didn’t capitalize.

“Wrong game, wrong opponent and wrong time of the season to have an off night, but all the credit to Toledo tonight as they played hard and deserved to win.”

For Toledo, goaltender Austin Nowak made 51 saves, while Caden Glamkowski went for a goal and two assists.

Carson Muglia, Gavin Elkins, Jay Cormier and Trevin Johnson also rallied for Toledo and Cameron Krause tacked on two assists.

Concluding the weekend at home Saturday, the MJDP team took a big 6-2 win over Toledo.

Caleb Simpson put up a goal and three assists and Chris Kobayashi scored twice in the win to go along with 29 saves from goaltender Will Belitski.

“This week was a great week for us,” Jets associate coach Jake Howie. “Started with a nice midweek win over Motor City and capped with a big win at home over Toledo. The guys have just been really good at the little details over the last month and they are starting to see results for it. And on top of doing the little things, we are starting to get some timely scoring as well.

“Team is playing really well here down the stretch and a hot team going into the playoffs here.”

Ludovick Dussault added a goal and an assist, while Gamelin and McKenna Baker scored and Evangelista contributed a pair of helpers.

Jets pick up wins over Battle Creek, Toledo; Jets Elite downs Motor City, falls to Fort Wayne; MJDP loses to Fort Wayne, Toledo

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. — It was a two-win week for the Metro Jets, while the MJDP lost twice and the Jets Elite squad went 1-1-0.

Starting the action Wednesday afternoon at Mount Clemens Ice Arena, the Jets scored once in each period and topped the Battle Creek Kernels 3-1.

River Lewis, Harry Dembowski and Jack Schnur found the net and Jets goalie Andrew Parmentier made 20 saves.

For the Kernels, Zane Wobig broke Parmentier’s shutout bid at 6:03 of the third period and Lennart Critzmann finished with 40 stops in net.

Jets goalie Cam Cyrus made 29 saves.

Luc Hill and Ronald Oyer scored for the Gamblers and Phillip Tate stopped 25 shots between the pipes.

The triple header at Mount Clemens Friday saw the Jets Elite and MJDP teams fall to the Fort Wayne Spacemen and the Jets shut out the Toledo Cherokee.

In the Jets Elite game, Robert Gross’ goal 16 seconds into overtime gave the Spacemen a 4-3 win.

Aidan RaCosta scored two goals — on his 19th birthday — and Sean O’Connor posted two assists.

Anderson also scored and goalie Brendan Dreisbach made 32 saves in goal.

“Grateful to get the two points against Motor City; I thought we played well,” said Jets associate coach Danny Vanderwiel. “We came out really well against Fort Wayne. Unfortunately, we kind of took our foot off the gas for a little bit and they took control of the game. We made a great push in the third to put ourselves in a spot to win the game. We did not close it out but happy to at least get a point.”

Chris Otero and Raphaël Belley-Pelletier each recorded a goal and an assist in the MJDP’s 4-2 setback to Fort Wayne.

Eliot Duerr made 31 saves between the pipes.

Alexis Toussaint, Ivan Khyrsa, Thomas Cheeney and Jack Backstrom scored and goalie Chris Gingras made 23 saves.

Against Toledo, goaltender Rostislav Efremov stopped all 41 shots he faced in a 3-0 win.

Evan Cote, Donovan Ascencio and AJ Zaccagni scored for the Jets.

Toledo goalie Caleb Kril made 31 saves.

“Fun game, fun atmosphere to be a part of,” said Jets associate head coach Jamie Lovell. “It felt like a playoff game for obvious reasons with the standings being so close between the two of us. Can’t say enough about our goaltending tonight. Rosti was incredible, especially in the third period when we got into penalty trouble. We got big goals when we needed them from Cote and ‘Donny’ and everyone else contributed in their own way, which is what you need in games like these.

“This is an exciting time of year. Each game matters and every opponent has gotten better.”

Finishing out the weekend, Toledo defeated the MJDP team 6-2 Saturday night at the Team Toledo Ice House.

McKenna Baker and Chase Martin scored and goalie Ethan Carlone finished with 33 saves and an assist on Martin’s goal.

Jace Weimer had a goal and an assist for Toledo, Cooper Brackett and Caden Glamkowski each chipped in two assists, and Landon German (penalty shot), Carson Muglia, Bryson Balina, Brendan St. Julian and Anthony DiFlora added goals.

Between the pipes, Austin Nowak collected 22 saves.

“When you look at the scores from the weekend, your first thought would be it was a bad weekend (for the MJDP), but it’s actually quite the opposite,” Jets associate coach Jake Howie said. “Couldn’t be happier with the group’s fight this weekend and 60-minute efforts both nights. Those are two good hockey teams we played and we gave ourselves a chance to win both nights.

“That’s the beauty of the game of hockey, some nights you get the bounces and calls and some nights you don’t. I have no doubt if we keep giving ourselves a chance to win hockey games, we’re going to be cashing in on those opportunities.”

Next week, the Jets host the Columbus Mavericks on Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. and are on the road Friday against the Cherokee at 7 p.m.

The MJDP team hosts Motor City on Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. and Toledo on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.

The Jets Elite hosts Motor City on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
