FRASER, Mich. – After going on the road and shutting out the Columbus Mavericks 10-0 Saturday night, the Metro Jets returned home to Fraser Hockeyland Sunday night, defeating the Toledo Cherokee 8-2.

Zach Rais and Justin Renzi each posted two goals and Anthony Cinato added a goal and three assists in the win.

“We came in knowing that Toledo is ranked first and we know we’re a good team and should be up there, too,” said Renzi. “Tonight, we just came in looking to prove that we are the better team and can put the puck in the net. We just wanted to get out there and make a statement.”

Conner Graham and Jets captain Brodie Thornton each contributed a goal and an assist and Trevor Granzow also scored.

Garrett Johnson and Nolan Turi collected three assists and Cam Conover tacked on two helpers in the win to back Machus Turner’s 15 saves in goal.

Toledo scored two late goals to spoil the shutout.

“We definitely had a good start,” Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville said. “Our guys executed early, were really snapping the puck around and I felt like we supported the puck well. Credit to their goalie (Mason Snyder), he made some great saves. That kid’s pretty good. I thought that we earned our goals early and put them on their heels.

“The game kept going our way until the end there and I’m a little disappointed how we handled the last five minutes. Credit to our guys for pushing through and to Machus for making some big saves when the game was tight.”

Snyder finished with 29 saves for the Cherokee and Paavo Sammalisto and Ben Mitchell each had a goal and an assist. Tyler Fox assisted on both goals.

The Jets next play two straight on the road against the Lansing Wolves Friday and Saturday night. Game times are 7:30 p.m. both nights from The Summit Sports and Ice Complex in Dimondale.

Also over the weekend, the MJDP Team split with the Midwest Blackbirds in Dyer, Ind., losing 4-3 Friday night and winning 6-4 Saturday night.

In the opener, Jake Aslanian, Garrick Smith and Nick Beeman scored and Anthony Crews suffered the loss in goal.

Saturday, Garret Benoit scored twice and added an assist, Aslanian added a goal and two assists and Ethan Smith, Brayden Tayles and Danny Haack also scored. Ethan Ryan made 22 saves between the pipes for the win.

The MJDP is on the road Friday night to play the Fort Wayne Spacemen from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse at 7:30 p.m.

All games will be streamed on www.HockeyTV.com.
