FRASER, Mich. – Two more Metro Jets players have made college hockey commitments, bringing the total from the 2018-19 season to eight players moving up the advancement ladder – with more to come.

Today, Jets defenseman Anthony Recchia (Rochester College) and forward Shane Haggerty (Grand Valley State University) announced where they will skate starting with the 2019-20 season.

“It’s great to see two more Jets make their decisions this week,” Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville said. “Both were able to take advantage of the platform here by developing and creating options collegiately. Recchia came a long way from his first year and became a consistent player by the end of the season. Haggerty, much like ‘Recchs,’ was used in many situations for the team. ‘Haggs’ had an injury that kept him out of the lineup for some time, but when he came back, the MJDP team went on a tear the last two months and he was a big reason.

“We wish both of them continued success.”

Recchia, a 19-year-old from Shelby Township, tallied four goals and 13 points in 41 games last season for the Jets.

“I chose RC because it's a smaller school and is close to home,” Recchia said. “Metro gave me the chance to go to school part-time, which helped me figure out what major I would like to pursue.”

Going home to play college hockey was a priority for Haggerty, a 19-year-old Grandville native.

“I decided on GVSU because it’s a great campus and is very close to home,” said Haggerty. “It’ll be sweet having players from the Jets there, so it won’t be too hard to fit in with the guys.”

Jets forward Joey Bruce committed to GVSU earlier this week.

This past season, Haggerty posted 14 goals and 29 points in 32 games.

“The Jets were a perfect bridge for getting me to this point because they helped develop my game in areas you wouldn’t think would make a huge difference,” Haggerty said. “They helped me get to Grand Valley, too.”

More commitments from Jets players are expected in the coming weeks and months.
