Winch scores late, Jets bounce St. Louis to earn Silver Cup semifinal berth

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Metro Jets are off to the Silver Cup National Championship semifinals after a thrilling 5-3 win Friday evening over the St. Louis Jr. Blues at Canlan Ice Sports.

Hayden Winch snapped a 3-3 tie with a goal at 19:16 of the third period and Connor Inger added an empty-net tally to lift the Jets to the win.

“Big character win by the guys,” said Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “We executed our game plan effectively. Obviously, we would have liked to capitalize on our chances at the midpoint to put the game away, but credit to their goalie for making some huge saves tonight. We should have capitalized more after another 50-plus shot night, but St. Louis tightened up on any second chances against. Either way, we are excited about being in the final four and get ready for Yellowstone tomorrow.”

The Jets and Yellowstone Quake play in the first semifinal Saturday at 3 p.m. EDT. The second semifinal goes at 6 p.m. between the Granite City Lumberjacks and Binghamton Jr. Senators.

Inger, Mathias Tellstrom and Jason Recchia scored in the second period for the Jets, while Andrew Kormos turned aside 21 shots for the win in goal.

Tellstrom (pictured) and Louis Boudon added two assists for Metro.

For the Jr. Blues, Ryan Edgar had a goal and an assist and goalie Sawyer Schmidt made 48 saves.
