Pittsburgh takes Game 1 of East Division finals with overtime win over Metro

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Vengeance tied it with seven seconds left in regulation and then won it 4-3 in overtime in knocking off the Metro Jets Friday night to take Game 1 of the NA3HL East Division finals at the Alpha Ice Complex.

Vincent Casale tallied the game-winner 7:26 into the extra frame after Martino Picariello knotted the game at 3-3 in the waning seconds of the third period.

“It’s unfortunate that it didn’t go our way tonight,” Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville said. “We had several opportunities to put the game away, but it’s how she goes sometimes in playoffs. Nobody feels bad for us and feelings don’t matter this time of the year, that’s for sure. If you can’t get up, be excited and contribute, then this game isn’t for you. Credit to their goalie (Joel De Simone) for playing an outstanding game.”

Jason Newel (pictured) had given the Jets a 3-2 lead at 8:34 of the third period.

Nick Foran and Mathias Tellstrom each recorded a goal and an assist in the loss, while Jake Gwillim turned aside 22 shots between the pipes.

De Simone finished with 51 saves for Pittsburgh.

The series now shifts to Fraser Hockeyland with Game 2 slated for Saturday night at 7 p.m.
