BLAINE, Minn. – It was a game the Metro Jets waited more than eight months to play.
In the finals of the National Championship tournament last April, the North Iowa Bulls raised the Silver Cup after a hard-fought win over the Jets.
Saturday evening at the Schwan Super Rink during the NA3HL Showcase, the Jets defeated the Bulls 3-1.
Louis Boudon, Hayden Winch and Jason Newel scored for the Jets, with Boudon’s and Newel’s coming in the third period after the teams were tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.
Jets goalie Jake Gwillim finished with 28 saves.
“Tonight was a fun game and our guys played well on both sides of the puck,” said Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “’Gwilly’ made the big save when we needed it and the late goal by Newel sealed it. Our guys played disciplined for a full 60.
“We will take the two points and get ready for Texas tomorrow.”
Owen Larson scored for the Bulls, who have lost their first two games at the showcase, and Brady Meyers stopped 22 shots in net in suffering the defeat.
“This was a big win after what happened the last time we saw North Iowa in the National Championship finals,” said Newel. “The atmosphere of today’s game was the same as the past 26 games. It was just another game and North Iowa played hard, but we did the little things to continue the streak.”
The Jets conclude the showcase playing the Texas Jr. Brahmas tomorrow at 4:20 p.m.
The game will be streamed on www.hockeytv.com.
