Metro drops St. Louis, off to Silver Cup semis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – With a 7-3 win Friday over the St. Louis Jr. Blues to wrap up round robin play at the Silver Cup, the Metro Jets finish 3-0 in Pool B and are off to the semifinals Saturday.

The Jets will play the Great Falls Americans and ex-Jets goalie Jake Stephan tomorrow at 6 p.m. EST.

The other semifinal pits the North Iowa Bulls against the Twin City Steel.

Friday, Jacob Drinkard posted two goals, including his first just 14 seconds into the game, and two assists to pace the Metro attack.

“We came out strong and never really looked back,” Drinkard said. “We got a couple quick key goals and that allowed us to control the game for all 60 minutes.”

Cam Schwartz tallied a goal and two assists, Kevin Shand two goals and Graham Day chipped in with four assists.

Devin Kelly and Stefan Boskovic also scored and Mathias Tellstrom and captain Matt Dempsey rang up two assists each.

“That was a great team win by the guys,” Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville said. “We came in with a game plan and executed it really well. The guys got rewarded for it and kept the pressure on them throughout the game. Lot of guys stepped up tonight, including Kaner, to help secure the win.

“We set out to win the round robin and now we focus on tomorrow’s game in the semis.”

“It was a great all-around team win,” added Metro goalie Austin Kane, who finished with 31 saves. “Everyone played a part in the victory and answered when they were called upon. We jumped on them early, which was big, but now it's over and we're focusing on what lies ahead. One game at a time. All of us are preparing for tomorrow now.”

St. Louis goalie Jacob Weatherly made 44 saves in the loss.
