Kormos pitches 31-save shutout as Jets open Silver Cup with win over Granite City

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Metro Jets began the NA3HL Silver Cup National Championship with a 3-0 shutout win Wednesday night over the Granite City Lumberjacks at Canlan Ice Sports.

Jets goalie Andrew Kormos stopped all 31 shots fired his way as Granite City outshot the Jets 31-27.

“Glad we came out with the win on Day 1,” said Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “Granite has a strong team, but we got two quick ones and solid goaltending from Kormos. With this format the first three days, you need to get as many points as possible and get ready for the next game.”

“It’s always good to win the first game, especially with this format – you don’t want to go in the hole early,” added Kormos. “I think we got all our nerves out in the divisional rounds. We have been in every situation already, so we are prepared for anything thrown at us. We just stuck to our game plan and got the win.”

Mathias Tellstrom and Chas Distelrath scored in the first period and Hayden Winch tallied the third goal late in the second period.

For the Lumberjacks, Mac Berglove made 24 saves between the pipes.

The Jets continue round-robin play Thursday against the Atlanta Capitals at 4 p.m. CDT.
