LANSING, Mich. – The Metro Jets opened the 2017-18 North American 3 Hockey League season with a resounding 8-3 win Friday night over the Lansing Wolves at the Summit Sports and Ice Complex.
Connor Inger recorded two goals and two assists, while Aaron Shahin added a pair of goals and tonight’s captain Griffin Sawyer and Kyle Gierman each had a goal and two assists.
Inger and Sawyer were joined on the top forward line by Mathieu LaForest, who picked up two assists in the game.
“It’s great to get the first win out of the way – it gets the ball rolling for the rest of the season,” said Inger. “It was a lot of fun playing with Sawyer. We were excited all summer for the opportunity to play together and LaForest fit in well and completed the line for us.”
Trevor Momot and Garrett Wojcicki added single goals and Rhett Limback and Jaylen Dziegelewski posted two assists apiece.
In goal, Brian Tallieu (pictured) started and made 15 saves on 17 shots through 43:07 before giving way to Jacob McClelland, who stopped four of five in the final 16:53.
“Good first road win for the guys tonight,” Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville said. “It was nice to see some new faces step up and contribute in their first game. I thought there was balanced production in our lineup, which was also positive. We still have a lot of work to do and naturally, we will expect the Wolves to respond tomorrow. We will now shift focus to tomorrow night.”
“Tomorrow night, we’re going to have to expect them to fire back,” added Inger. “No one likes to get pushed around in their own rink, so we need to be on our game tomorrow night.”
For Lansing, Blake Siewertsen led the offense with a goal and an assist and Will Ignatovich made 51 saves in goal.
The two teams play again Saturday night in the Jets’ home opener at Fraser Hockeyland. Warmups set for 7 p.m. and puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
