Gwillim, Day lead Jets past Toledo in Friday night road shutout over Cherokee

TOLEDO, Ohio – Metro Jets captain Graham Day (pictured) scored two goals five seconds apart in the third period and Jake Gwillim made 20 saves in goal as the Jets blanked the Toledo Cherokee 5-0 Friday night at the Team Toledo Ice House.

Trevor Momot, Chas Distelrath and Cam Schwartz also scored for Metro.

“We played a complete game tonight,” said Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “We created chances and pushed the pace throughout the game. I thought our guys responded well this week and everyone got involved offensively tonight. It was good to see several players step up in absence of a few of our forwards tonight, and ‘Gwilly’ made some big saves when we needed him.

“We still have to finish the road games stretch and will get ready for next weekend now.”

Marc Schwartz contributed two assists in the win.

“After last weekend, we came to the rink ready to work this week and get back to playing our best hockey,” Jets forward Chase Sereno said. “We all came ready to play Jets blue-collar hockey tonight. We eliminated their scoring chances and capitalized on our chances. I feel we have the best group of guys here this year to make this a season to remember.”

Toledo goalie Roman Malkov finished with 47 saves.

The Jets are now off until hitting the road next Friday to play the Southern Tier Xpress and next Saturday to play the Pittsburgh Vengeance.
