GENEVA, Ill. – Jon Severson’s goal at 8:04 of the second overtime lifted the Nashville Jr. Predators over the Metro Jets 3-2 Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the NA3HL Silver Cup tournament at the Fox Valley Ice Arena.
Cooper McLean’s goal with 5:30 to play in the third period pulled the Jets into a 2-2 tie and then nothing was settled in the first overtime.
“Tough loss for the guys today,” said Metro head coach Justin Quenneville. “Overtime can go either way and Nashville got the luck tonight. Unfortunately, we didn't have our best game. We didn't play Metro Jets hockey tonight and let Nashville play around with the biscuit a little more than we should have. We will have a short memory with this one and regroup for tomorrow's game."
“I didn’t think we played to our full potential in the first two periods, but towards the end of the game in the third and in overtime, I thought we picked it up and were playing Jets hockey,” added Metro forward Jacob Drinkard, who had an assist in the game. “This game hurts, but we’ve got to come ready to win tomorrow.”
Metro plays the Great Falls Americans Friday at 2 p.m.
After a scoreless first period, Ryan Bloom started the scoring on a Jets’ power play 1:13 into the second period before Nick Mammel tied it for Nashville at 16:55.
The Jr. Predators then took a 2-1 lead on Colton Anderson’s goal 7:35 into the third period, setting the stage for McLean to tie it late.
Jets’ goalie Jake Stephan made 44 saves, while Nathan Klebe stopped 28 for Nashville.
