WOOSTER, Ohio – The Wooster Oilers scored the first goal of the game Friday night at the Alice Noble Ice Arena.
Then the Metro Jets scored the next seven to take a 7-1 win in the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
Jason Newel and Dylan Naumovski led the way with two goals and an assist each for the Jets, while Cam Schwartz added a goal and two assists to help back Jake Gwillim’s 22 saves in goal.
“We knew Wooster would be ready to play and they came out with a lot of energy early,” Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville said. “After they struck first, we got back to controlling the play and taking advantage of our opportunities. Overall, it was a decent game. When we moved the puck, we created a lot, but we will need to clean up in our zone a little for tomorrow.”
Metro captain Graham Day (pictured) contributed a goal plus an assist, Louis Boudon chipped in a goal and Robby Flannery tacked on three assists to go along with a pair of helpers from Mathias Tellstrom and Jake Gleason.
“We had a lot of good movement and used our defense well in the offensive zone,” Newel said. “My linemates, Gleason and Schwartz, really helped me out tonight.
“We are expecting a battle tomorrow from Wooster, but are looking to complete the sweep.”
Wooster goalie Creighton Furber finished with 42 saves and Andrew Romani tallied the game-opening goal.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at 7 p.m. back at Fraser Hockeyland.
