ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – It took the Metro Jets just 21 seconds to get on the scoreboard in their NA3HL Silver Cup Championship Tournament opener Wednesday against the Texas Jr. Brahmas at Canlan Ice Sports.
Throw six more goals on the board over the next 59 minutes and the Jets downed the Jr. Brahmas 7-0.
Kam Limburg played the first 40 minutes and made 13 saves, while Austin Kane played the third period and turned aside all five shots he faced for the combined shutout in goal.
“Our guys were excited for this week and the game plan was simple – come out hard and play our way,” said Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “Texas opted to trap us and we were ready for it. It's only one game and we move onto getting ready for Twin City.”
The Jets continue the Pool B round robin Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against the Twin City Steel, who lost 4-3 Wednesday to the St. Louis Jr. Blues.
Mathias Tellstrom’s goal on the opening shift of the game was all the Jets needed Wednesday. Tellstrom added three assists for a four-point game and linemate Kevin Shand scored two goals and added five assists.
David Chavis, Jacob Drinkard, Devin Kelly and Dylan Naumovski also scored, while Michael Tratar and Marc Schwartz each tacked on a pair of assists.
“I think we did a lot of the little things right and that paid off for us tonight,” Chavis said. “We all know what our end goal is and tonight was just another step in the process. Obviously, the win is exciting, but it's just another game and we're already preparing for tomorrow. There's gonna be a lot of ice baths and hydration tonight, then back at it tomorrow.”
Texas goalies Tyler Myers and Brandon Perrone combined to stop 36 saves.
