BLAINE, Minn. – Robby Flannery’s goal in the fifth round of the shootout lifted the Metro Jets to a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon over the Binghamton Jr. Senators to open the NA3HL Showcase at the Schwan Super Rink.
Jets goalie Andrew Kormos (pictured) stopped all five Binghamton attempts in the shootout to preserve the win.
“It’s huge to start the Showcase off with a win and it really sets the table for having a good finish to the rest of the Showcase,” said Kormos. “I thought the boys came out and played a really good game today.
“My mentality going into the shootout was to make saves until we get one. I prefer having us shoot first because it gives me control. ‘Flans’ made a great shot and I just had to do my part, and that was all we needed.”
Kyle Gierman and Mathieu LaForest scored in regulation time, while Kormos made 25 stops through 60 minutes and the five-minute overtime.
“I’m happy with how we controlled the pace and the majority of the game,” said Jets coach-GM Justin Quenneville. “Disappointed that we didn’t capitalize on our chances tonight and that so many questionable calls were made. Either way, we needed to beat both groups tonight, and we did. Proud of them to fight through the adversity.
“Kormos was huge for our group tonight.”
Brady Anderson turned aside 30 shots in the Binghamton net. Eric Melso and Brad Becker tallied the Jr. Senators’ goals.
The Jets continue the Showcase Monday at 1:45 p.m. EST against the L/A Nordiques.
